Centurion has a pretty interesting story. It seems that Raleigh USA did a test run of bike frames made in Japan and the quality was above what they were producing elsewhere. Unwilling to sell frames that would cast their usual stock in a poor light the Raleigh head office in England nixed the idea, and a Raleigh sales agent named Mitchell Weiner took the bikes and sold them as Centurions.
I dont put this bike up because it's remarkable, it's a pretty standard mid range 80s sport bike. Tange cro mo, suntour compnants and a sugino crank. Ugly as sin. The catalog calls this gold but it reads more like double brown.
But, for $50 anyone equipping with the very basic essential tools and skills could be riding this bike after an afternoon of tinkering. To illustrate my point I figure you will need:
A new chain
brake/shifter cables
Rim tape
tires and tubes
All of which I sourced, without trying very hard, for $54. 27" rims, which can be a bane, are very helpful here because they put us in cheapie tire territory. I'm even resisting the benefit of the doubt tire wise because I suspect the one pictured may still be good. But I priced two tires, they're cheap. I'm guessing you can reuse the cable housing. Tubes and cables can usually be picked up cheap and on sale, and you should because you'll need it.
The essential tool kit includes Tire Levers and a spoke wrench. Otherwise you will need allen wrenches, screwdrivers, and a socket set all of which you should have. Go look in your dad's basement if you dont. Tire levers are $3, the good Park triple spoke wrench is $13. For $16 you can do every common maitenance job your bike might need.
All told, $104 for a freshly tuned bike boom 12 speed with new tires, tubes, and cables. A better deal could not be had.
